What Happens During a Male’s Physical Exam?


A yearly physical exam for men can include a:

  • Testicular exam: the physician can check each testicle for lumps, tenderness, or fluctuations in size. Most men with testicular cancer observe a growth before going to the doctor.
  • Hernia exam: this test checks for a weakness in the abdominal wall, between the scrotum and intestines.
  • Penis exam: the physician may be able to observe evidence of a sexually transmitted infection such as warts or discharge from the penis.
  • Prostate exam: a digital rectal exam allows the doctor to feel the prostate for the size and presence of any suspicious lumps.
